MESSAGE FROM THE COMMISSIONER

And on to the playoffs we go!  Again, congrats to the teams who made it and commiserations with those who did not (and at least you guys have your #1 pick :O) For those who’s season is over, please don’t disappear just yet, we will have some voting on awards and then the ballot coming along in the next few weeks. For those who have some work left to do, the playoff files are ready and let’s try and get coaches out as soon as you can.

Playoff matchups are set, here they are and some comments on how I think the series may go. Playoff info is below including overuse of players and who may have to miss what during each series (I ignored anyone who missed just 1 game, anything beyond that has penalties listed). If you can show me where a wrong coach was used then penalties can be rescinded.

Prince of Wales Conference

Anaheim vs Washington
Arizona vs Philadelphia
Carolina vs NY Rangers
NY Islanders vs Chicago

Three very interesting matchups that are likely toss ups and then one that should be a blow out.  We’ll start with the easy one as the Rangers end the season with over 30 more points than the Canes and this first round matchup should be a walk, but the Rangers have struggled to get out of the first round the last couple of seasons and I expect that Carolina will give them a better series than expected and push it to 6 of 7 games.  Islanders and Blackhawks is a rematch from last year when the Islanders downed the Hawks, but this year with the Isles selling off some assets at the deadline, Chicago should hold the advantage and even the score.  The Caps just edged out the Flyers for the division and only 7 points were between first and fourth place, so these should be a couple of tight series.  Both are likely too close to call, but in the end I think it will be goaltending that will win out and Philly and Washington will both defend home ice in long series.

Clarence Campbell Conference

Boston vs Dallas
Montreal vs San Jose
Los Angeles vs Florida
Vancouver vs Pittsburgh

Both Boston and Los Angeles have really tough matchups in round 1 and I don’t see much that will keep them from going to form as Florida and Dallas will win in short series.  Montreal and San Jose is another rematch from round 1 last year and the Sharks won without home ice and this time with them getting the extra home game look for them to win again in 6 or 7 games.  Vancouver loaded up at the deadline and it might be enough to make a run at Pittsburgh who just missed out on the division and conference championship. While the Pens finished 17 points better in the standings, Vancouver made a big run at the end, losing only 7 of their last 26 games after the deadline and with Shesterkin in net, this will be a series where a home loss by either team will be the difference.

With the season complete, we have some regular season awards that can be sent out based on the final stats, congratulations to all!
