MESSAGE FROM THE COMMISSIONER

And let’s move right on to the playoff so we aren’t finishing after the NHL if we can help it :O) the playoff brackets are set and here are the first round matchups:

Prince of Wales

Detroit vs St. Louis
Philadelphia vs Arizona
Anaheim vs NY Rangers
Carolina vs NY Islanders

Campbell Conference

Pittsburgh vs San Jose
Montreal vs Boston
Edmonton vs Florida
Vancouver vs Colorado

If regular season means anything, the top 3 series in the Prince of Wales should not be close with St. Louis, Arizona and NY Rangers all finishing at least 15 points ahead of their opponent, so we will see if any of them can pull the big upset and make it an interesting series. NY Islanders and Carolina should be a very close one as they finish just 1 point apart in the division and Carolina actually score more goals and gave up less than the Isles, so not sure either team winning would really be an upset. Let’s see what kind of magic the Isles can pull off to avoid the lower seed Hurricanes moving on to round 2.

The Campbell conference is very different as San Jose finished just 10 points ahead of wild card Pittsburgh and who knows how this family battle might go, likely will depend on whether the Pens goalies show up and help out at all. Florida finished 32 points ahead of Edmonton, which sometimes can mean nothing, we’ll see if the Oilers can at least make things difficult for the Panthers. The other two matchups are very close and no real way to make a call as Boston and Montreal finished in a dead heat in the regular season and even were very close in goal differential, just a matter of which goalie plays better as it often is. Colorado and Vancouver is also a close one in the standings and on the scoreboard and this one will be a matter of which offense can solve the other teams netminder.

Here is a quick reminder of the playoff usage limits as well as a list of overused players and penalties for them during the playoffs.

Overused Players

Arizona – Chandler Stephenson – 3 games over, Must miss games 1-2 each series

Detroit – Mikhail Sergachev – 4 games over, Must miss games 1-3 each series

Montreal – Jared Anderson-Dolan – 4 games over, Must miss games 1-3 each series

NY Islanders - Jacob Markstrom - 3 games over, Must miss games 1-2 each series

St. Louis - Jesse Puljujarvi - 10 games over, Not eligible for playoffs
          - Rasmus Ristolainen – 2 games over, Must miss game 1 each series
          - Gabriel Vilardi – 2 games over, Must miss game 1 each series

PLAYOFF USAGE LIMITS FOR SKATERS:

        1) 60 or more NHL games can play all playoff games (per series)
        2) 55-59 NHL games      6 playoff games
        3) 50-54 NHL games      5 playoff games
        4) 40-49 NHL games      4 playoff games
        5) 30-39 NHL games      3 playoff games
        6) 20-29 NHL games      2 playoff games
        7) 10-19 NHL games      1 playoff game

      PLAYOFF USAGE LIMITS FOR GOALTENDERS
Goalies with 1-14 games may only dress as backups
Goalies with 15-19 games may only start 1 game per series (but may dress as backups in all other games)
Goalies with 20-24 games may only start 2 games per series (but may dress as backups in all other games)
Goalies with 25-29 games may only start 3 games per series (but may dress as backups in all other games)
Goalies with 30+ games may start all playoff games in a series (or may be dressed as a backup)

Injury backups may only play if the computer pulls the starter due to an injury OR the team is down by 4 or more goals at any time in the game (a mercy rule basically). The second part may be accomplished by a computer setting for road games that is defined as a team being down by 4 or more goals OR by a home coach making this decision when his team is down by 4 or more goals.

What a finish to the regular season as the final playoff spot comes down to the last game as Detroit pulls the upset on Carolina to sneak past Buffalo into wild card #2 in the Prince of Wales. The Campbell conference had a very similar finish as Toronto has a huge final block at home and Boston has to come back and tie them in their final games to earn the final wild card in that conference as well. Congratulations to St. Louis, who also had to make a huge comeback to win the Commissioner’s Cup after Arizona went 5-0 in their games, the Blues go 4-0-1 and just get by the Coyotes for the top spot in the league. The NY Rangers once again lead the league in goals, edging out St. Louis for that title while San Jose wins the Gump Worsley Memorial trophy for best goals against by almost 20 goals over St Louis as well. NY Rangers have the best powerplay in the league at 27.4% while not surprisingly San Jose has the best PK at 85.9%.

Leon Draisaitl is your Gordie Howe Award winner with 111 points to beat out Kucherov by a single point. Sam Reinhart of the Rangers wins the Phil Esposito Trophy for most goals with 58 on the season, well ahead of Stamkos at 51. Pelle Lindbergh Memorial Trophy goes to Connor Ingram in San Jose with a 2.28 GAA and the Tiger Williams Award is Nikita Zadorov with 136 PIM.

Clarence Campbell conference came down to the final day to figure out the wild card and the top of the Orr division. Florida is the #1 seed in the conference and will face off with Edmonton for the 4th straight season while San Jose is the #1 seed in the Orr despite a 3 way tie at the top and will host Pittsburgh the wild card #2. Boston edges Montreal for home ice in the Orr division matchup and Colorado hosts Vancouver in the Lemieux.

Prince of Wales conference St. Louis wins the Commissioner’s Cup and will host the #2 wild card Detroit team. NY Rangers win the Howe and host Anaheim in round 1 as the wild card #1. Arizona just misses out on the top spot and has Philadlephia in round 1 in the Horton and then NY Islanders host Carolina who they edge by a single point for home ice in the Howe.

The draft lottery order is set and we will run that sometime after round 2 of the playoffs,

1.  Washington

2.  Los Angeles

3.  Calgary

4.  Dallas

5.  Toronto

6.  Chicago

7.  New Jersey

8.  Buffalo

Round 1 of the playoffs is ready to go and the updated league file and Excel file is on the website.  Remember that all injuries this year are coaches decisions BUT all players are limited to the exact number of NHL games from last year, so plan accordingly.  If you are sending the same lineup for all 8 games then just a regular coach should work. If you want to set specific lineups for each game, then you need to use the Daily Lineups as it gives you a lot more flexibility. As soon as you have your coach set for your first 4 road games, please send that out to the list (and list who the coach is for so it is easier for teams to keep the ones they need).  Also, I would ask you PLEASE include your 4 home strats as well both for your sake and mine as if I have to sim your home games for any reason I will just let the game set up your strat if none is defined and you will have to deal with any penalties later on.  I am going to continue using the strat file page and upload everyones coaches to the website like I did in the past so they are easy to find when needed.

**** IMPORTANT  - Action PC Game File Update dated 10/16/2024.

You need to send out game exports as well as boxscores for all 4 home games by the second Sunday of the block at 9 pm This is MANDATORY, both the exports AND boxscores please.   Game summaries are nice, even if it’s just one quick comment for all 4 games, just adds to the league and makes it easier for everyone to see what is going on.  If I do not receive game exports after sending updates on Saturday and Sunday, I will send one more request directly about an hour before the deadline on Sunday.  Unless I get a request for an extension of time, I will wait til the deadline and about 30 minutes later I will sim games so I can get new files out before I go to bed Sunday night.
