MESSAGE FROM THE COMMISSIONER

Thanks guys for another great season and an even better playoffs.  Congratulations to Sean Savage and the Toronto Maple Leafs for winning their second straight RHL Cup beating out the commissioner and his Buffalo Sabres in 6 games.  Also congratulations to the award winners for this year which are all included below and of course on the league awards page.

I have updated the coaching records page for anyone who is interested.  Mark McNeil and the Buffalo Sabres go over 700 wins this year, while Craig Steel and Curtis Aikens pass the 600 win mark and Sean Savage, Phil Goldring and John Burns all get their 500 wins this season.  Mark McNeil is in sight of 100 playoff wins at 98, while Sean Savage goes over 80 wins and is at a near .600 pace.  Toronto also got it’s 100th playoff win as a franchise, the first team to hit that plateau.

Final playoff files are up for anyone who is interested, go ahead and get them and enjoy.  It’s the offseason now, I will get started on the new excel file soon (anyone have the NHL stats in excel?) and the ratings are being worked on and I will get things rolling as soon as they are finalized.  No trading until the ratings are finalized, but feel free to talk all you want.  The draft order is up and finalized with traded picks for those interested.  As soon as the final ratings are released I will put out an updated spreadsheet and figure we will have free agent decisions due a couple of weeks after.

RHL AWARD RESULTS

Wayne Gretzky Award (MVP)

As is often the case the scoring race winner is again the league MVP,

this years it is the NY Islanders Patrick Sharp who led the league with

105 points and led the voting with 10 first place votes and 19 ballots

overall for the easy win.  Ovechkin edges out Seguin on the strength of

a couple of extra first place votes (6 to 4) and Bishop finishes a close

4th with 4 1st place votes of his own.

Terry Sawchuk Trophy (Best Goaltender)

Ben Bishop is the run away winner in this category as he takes in 16

first place votes and is on 23 ballots (ok, which one of you goofballs

didn't vote for him at all? :O).  Ryan Miller edges out Rask for the

second slot despite only having 3 first place votes to Rask's 4 by

receiving 11 second place votes.

Doug Harvey Trophy (Defensive Dman)

A guy who didn't even make any of the All-League teams ends up at the

top of the category as Shea Weber takes home the vote for the top

defensive dman in the league on the strength of 12 first place votes and

17 ballots.  McDonagh finishes a distant second with 4 first place votes

and 17 ballots as well.  Jack Johnson was a close third with 6 first

place votes but not quite enough to get near the top spot.  Tyler Myers

receives the other two first place votes.

Bobby Orr Award (Offensive Dman)

This one was not surprise as Victor Hedman leads the All-League voting

on defense and he edges out Erik Karlsson for the top offensive dman in

the league this season on the strength of 8 first place votes to only 6

for Karlsson.  Pietrangelo receives just 2 first place votes, but his 7

second place votes were enough for third place.

Bob Gainey Trophy (Defensive Forward)

A runaway win for Jonathan Toews as he has 13 first place votes and 20

total ballots to take the top spot.  Bergerson was a very distant second

with 3 first place votes and Marleau just edges Getzlaf for third as

both end up tied and with 2 first place votes, but Marleau has an extra

second place vote to earn the spot.

Cam Neely Award (Power Forward)

Another close vote as we have 3 players with 6 first place votes each,

but David Backes takes home the award as he was on 17 total ballots to

edge out Ovechkin for the top spot.  Bergeron also had 6 first place

votes, but then didn't show up on another ballot for the most unusual

part of this years voting.

Ace Bailey Award (Rookie of the Year)

This one was a two horse race but in the end wasn't as close as it

looked as Nathan MacKinnon is this years rookie of the year. MacKinnon

has 14 first place votes to 9 for Monahan and finished on 21 total

ballots to just 20 for Monahan who finished a strong second.  Maata was

a distant third place with no first place votes.

Scotty Bowman Award (Coach of the Year)

First off let me say that you all are the biggest bunch of brown nosers

I have ever seen, but thanks, as somehow I take home the coach of the

year honors with 13 first place votes and 22 of 24 ballots for an easy

win.  Jean-Guy was second with 6 first place votes and 17 ballots and

Sean Savage finishes in third place with 4 first place votes.

Sam Pollock Award (GM of the Year)

A little closer vote this time but Sean Savage is the clear gm of the

year as he has 9 first place votes and 15 total ballots.  Crag Steel

edges out Mark McNeil by a single vote because of his 6 first place

votes to just 3 for me and an extra third place vote that puts him over

the top.

Bob Nystrom Award (Playoff MVP)

Usually this gets added later, but since the playoffs are done, I will

put this one on here as well. Many players were deserving of this award

as Pominville and Marleau put up 22 and 20 points respectively for

Buffalo including 12 goals for Marleau.  Duncan Keith had 18 assists to

lead all skaters and Henrique and Malkin each score 6 goals for their

clubs.  Ryan Miller put up 14 wins with just a 52.6 IRSV% and .894 sv

pct, while Crawford matched his 14 wins with a 60 IRSV% and a .924 sv

pct, but in the end, it's Alexander Ovechkin who scores 16 goals, 6 on

the powerplay and 4 game winners for 24 total points in just 20 games

who is this years Playoff MVP.
